The Tara practice which we do every morning in Samye Ling, comes from Tara tantra.
There are various Tara tantras and there are also many different Tara practices. There are short and long practices. But all of these are part of the tantras and generally they belong to kriya yoga tantra.
All tantric Buddhism is divided into four tantras: first is kriya tantra, then charya tantra, yoga tantra and anuttarayoga tantra. I think most of the visualisation practises and Vajrayana practices we do, they tend to come from the anuttarayoga tantra, generally.
But this one is more connected to the kriya tantra, and it says that the kriya yoga tantra was based a lot on the daily life of the rishis and brahmins in India. It places a lot of emphasis on purity of actions, purity of daily life. Everything has to be very clean. Certain practices have that strongly emphasized. For Green Tara practice that is the reason why you are not supposed to be eating meat or drinking alcohol before you do the practice.
You are supposed to have a lot of cleanliness around, when you are doing it, things have to be done very correctly. This is very strongly related to this kriya yoga tantra. Because the Tibetans eat a lot of meat, for that reason those practices were tend to be done very early in the morning, before breakfast, before you eat anything.
But if you do Tara practice as a retreat or as long term, if you do many Tara pujas during the day, then generally you are recommended to keep these guidelines connected with the kriya yoga tantra of no meat, no alcohol, staying very clean. Like I think brahmins take showers every day, wash every day before you do practice, all that kind of thing. It is probably one of the most common practices everywhere you go. For Tibetans the two practices that everybody does, whether you are in the monastery or outside the monastery, are Tara, or at least the praises to Tara, and Chenrezig, the mani-mantra and the praises to Tara, everybody knows them by heart.
Everybody chants them; when you are riding on busses, around dangerous corners and bends with steep ravines, then everybody is doing their praises to Tara overcoming fear and obstacles.
So it is probably one of the most common practices that you find everywhere. When it talks about the different stories about the origins of Tara, both Green and White Tara, the most common story is that Chenrezig made a great promise, at a certain time he made this great commitment to help and liberate all beings, and that he would only become enlightened himself, when all beings were liberated.
He made this commitment to work for all beings for kalpas and kalpas and until he had liberated limitless sentient beings, he would not reach enlightenment.
All these beings are still there, how come, what has happened? He started getting discouraged, he started losing the strength of his commitment, it was fading a bit, there were few doubts.
It is said that at that time, due to his despair, his head split into many pieces. You have to be more courageous, you have to be stronger in your commitment. In this post you will learn who Green Tara is, what her mantra means, and how to say it in Tibetan.
You can hear His Holiness chant the mantra in an audio below, and learn how to say it for yourself in a video below.
Green Tara Mantra: Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha
Tara, who Tibetans also call Dolmais commonly thought to be a Bodhisattva or Buddha of compassion and action, a protector who comes to our aid to relieve us of physical, emotional and spiritual suffering. Of these 21 forms, two are especially popular among Tibetan people — White Tarawho is associated with compassion and long life, and Green Tara, who is associated with enlightened activity and abundance.
Tibetans love to pray and recite mantras, and the Green Tara mantra is one of the main three or four mantras that we say to help ourselves and others. See our posts on om mani padme hum and om muni muni maha muniye sohatwo other very popular mantras. And if you are interested in hearing the otherwordly sounds of Tibetan prayers in monasteries in Tibet, you can learn how to visit Tibet here. As we see in the image above, Green Tara is usually depicted as a compassionate being ready to step down from her lotus throne to offer comfort and protection from all of the sufferings we experience in the world.
While her left leg is folded in the contemplative position, her right leg is outstretched, ready to spring into action. In her hands she also holds closed blue lotuses utpalaswhich symbolize purity and power. The first Dalai Lama wrote that we can call on her to instantly save us from eight particular dangers, each of which represents a corresponding human mental problem:.
Ordinary Tibetans pray to her when we are sick, when leaving for a long journey, or when we hope for success or wealth. Actually, we are also asking to be liberated from the misery of the mental delusions and negative emotions that blind us to true freedom, and to achieve the same enlightened body, speech and mind that Tara represents, not only for our own benefit, but for the benefit of all sentient beings.
Lama Zopa walks us through the mantra in a long discussion on Tara, which we have excerpted and shortened below:. Like om mani padme humthe Green Tara Mantra is much greater than the sum of its parts, with layers of meaning and benefit that resonate with us beyond what our minds perceive.

Now I am in Canada. Hi Sangeeta, and thanks so much for your nice thoughts. If anyone reading this knows, let us know and we will pass it on to you. Do this with fervent devotion consistently for a long time.Green Tara is a gentle female embodiment of universal compassion.
She represents the virtuous, enlightened, and miraculous activity of all Buddhas. She reaches out her hand in the gesture of granting protection, freeing one from fear, obstacles, and difficulties. With her right foot stepping forward, she is alert, determined, and ready to actively help all who call upon her. She is the one who helps us cross over the ocean of suffering and guides us upon the path of enlightenment.
The original of this Green Tara was made by Zanabazarthe greatest Mongolian sculptor who was most famous for his gilt bronze sculptures. Zanabazar was the reincarnation of Taranatha and a Tulku in the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
The Green Tara, one of his most famous and most beautiful statues, was modeled after his consort who died at the age of eighteen shortly after the statue was completed. Zanabazar sculptures are rare even in Mongolia where they are considered national treasures. This Tara made in Nepal differs from the original only in the Tibetan-Newari facial features and in the beautifully expressed ornamentation.

If we look at it, this is the image that we are to keep in mind, to fix in our mind, and to meditate on her presence, in other words, that she is right there in front of us, in the sky in front of us, so that the meditator meditates on this image of Green Tara, that she is actually present in this form that we see in the portrait, and that she is actually sitting there in front of us.
Now who is Green Tara? For this meditation, we have to understand the great value of Green Tara in order to do this. So when we say that to do the meditation we have to understand the great value of Green Tara, what does this mean? The great value of Green Tara is based upon the ability to make a key differentiation. The differentiation is between the enlightened being, that is the Buddha, and ordinary sentient being, the ordinary living being.
Benefits of Green Tara Practice
You could say, very rightly, that the ordinary living being is also very valuable, very precious, but precious in a different way, valuable in a different way from the enlightened being. The ordinary living being in the world, like ourselves, is in a very vulnerable state in which there is a great deal of misery. The ordinary being is caught up helplessly in this state of misery. On the other hand, the enlightened being, like the Buddha, like Green Tara, has attained a state of freedom which we call liberation from all these miseries.
So that is the key discrimination, the key point of differentiation between the ordinary being and the enlightened being. We must appreciate that in order to understand the great value of Green Tara. When we speak of the enlightened being, generally the term we use is "Buddha", and what is a Buddha? First of all, we speak of the three types of Buddha: the Buddhas of the past, the Buddhas of the present, and the Buddhas of the future.
Those of the past, of course, are those who have appeared in the world and are no longer existing, or appeared in a former age of the world. Then the present Buddha that appeared in this world, in this epoch, is Sakyamuni Buddha. And then, for instance, the Buddha who is to appear in this world in a future epoch is Maitreya, so this is an example of the Buddhas of the three times.
So when you hear that term, the Buddhas of the three times, that's what it means. Now another way in which we understand enlightened being is through the three aspects, that is body, speech and mind. She appears as a female bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism, and as a female Buddha in Vajrayana Buddhism.
She is known as the "mother of liberation", and represents the virtues of success in work and achievements. Myriad beings were undergoing the agonies of boiling, burning, hunger, thirst, yet they never perished, sending forth hideous cries of anguish all the while. When Avalokiteshvara saw this, tears sprang to his eyes. A teardrop from his right eye fell to the plain and became the reverend Bhrikutiwho declared: "Child of your lineage!
As you are striving for the sake of sentient beings in the Land of Snows, intercede in their suffering, and I shall be your companion in this endeavour! A teardrop from his left eye fell upon the plain and became the reverend Tara. She also declared, "Child of your lineage!

Mallar Ghosh believes her to have originated as a form of the goddess Durga in the Hindu Puranas. It may be true that goddesses entered Buddhism from Shaktism i. Middle kingdoms of India. According to Beyer, it would seem that the feminine principle makes its first appearance in Buddhism as the goddess who personified prajnaparamita.
As one of the three deities of long life, White Tara Saraswati is associated with longevity. White Tara counteracts illness and thereby helps to bring about a long life. She embodies the motivation that is compassion and is said to be as white and radiant as the moon. The Buddhist Goddess Taragold and silver, ca. Mongolia, ca. In this tale there is a young princess who lives in a different world system, millions of years in the past.
For quite a number of aeons she makes offerings to the Buddha of that world system, whose name was Tonyo Drupa.
She receives special instruction from him concerning bodhicitta - the infinitely compassionate mental state of a bodhisattva.
After doing this, some monks approach her and suggest that because of her level of attainment she should next pray to be reborn as a male to progress further. At this point she lets the monks know in no uncertain terms that it is only "weak minded worldlings" who see gender as a barrier to attaining enlightenment. She sadly notes there have been few who wish to work for the welfare of sentient beings in a female form, though. Therefore, she resolves to always be reborn as a female bodhisattva, until samsara is no more.
Following her cultivation of bodhicittathe bodhisattva's motivation, she looked upon the situation of those striving towards full awakening and she felt that there were too few people who attained Buddhahood as women. So she vowed, "I have developed bodhicitta as a woman.Photo by Simon Houlton. Amoghapasha Card. Animal Liberation Practice. Black Garuda Practice.
